How's it all started
What's new?

Appenzeller generally is a very intelligent and easily-trained dog, however if you are planning to build a career in dog obedience disciplines it's better to choose from some working/service breeds. Multiple repeating of the same task over and over again usually bothers an Appenzeller and it soon looses the drive. They can hardly tolerate the inanity. It is certainly easy for them to get and perform the task, however every single time they are going to ask you: "Why?" And you have to be able to explain, it this case the life with this beautiful breed will be full of joy and your dog will always be attentive to you and easy to manage and any stranger observing would be amazed by it's bright mind.

If you love nature and are seeking for an adventure companion, if you are drawn to anything extraordinary, if you have a big family which is always loud and cheerful, if you perhaps live in a big house or even own any cows....but most importantly -

If you are ready to treat a dog as a personality but not as a slave then an Appenzeller -

 is the choice for you!

Appenzeller Sennenhund - is a medium sized dog, almost square in its format with a low hanging chest and rather heavy bone. They are strong and fast, with a lot of endurance. Entirely devoted to their family and the time spent together. They gladly accept any task whether it's just a simple fetch game or a 20 km marathon. Your Appenzeller would follow you anywhere. However, they are quite independent in thinking, able to analyse your actions and benefit from what they've learned. They are quite cunning basically, it just depends on a sertain dog how much of a "smart-ass" it is. Non-picky eating, good health and a nice thick coat makes this breed an easy farm dog where they continue to be used for the guarding and cattle herding purposes. The main part of the population though is now used as companions. They're ideal for those keeping a healthy active lifestyle or big families. It is also still pretty often among Appenzellers to express a hunting instinct in which case this dog can be used for tracking.
